All of Esmeralda's Chrysanthemum are greenhouse-grown year-round at Esmeralda Colombia and Toucan Flowers, Costa Rica. Chrysanthemums are classified into two categories: spray types (multiple flowers per stem) and single types (one flower per stem). These two types, in turn, are divided according to their shape.
Spray Chrysanthemum:
Sprays are also known as pompons. We grow only a single stem crop to assure uniform stem quality. The stem length, when cut, averages between 24 and 32 inches (60-80 cm). The laterals may be broken apart and used as filler or single stems may be grouped together to create a showy and full arrangement. Sprays can be classified in the following categories
Cushion:
Also known as a decorative, the blooms are formally shaped with a full center, slightly more compact than the surrounding petals.
Daisy:
Up to five rows of petals surround a yellow or green compact central disc.
Novelty:
Anemone:
Also known as a Shasta, this form is similar to a daisy. However, the central disc is a larger and less compact raised cushion.
Button:
Close, firm petals form a tight globe shape.
Micro:
A smaller version of a Cushion, Daisy or Novelty
Spider:
A smaller version of the Fugi (see below). Petals are tubular, elongated and shorter in the center
Single Chrysanthemum:
Single types are also known as disbuds or mums. During growth, the lateral buds of the plant are removed, allowing all energy to be directed towards the growth of the terminal or main bud. These single flower heads can grow to over 5 inches (15 cm) across. Stems are usually 24-32 inches (60-80 cm) in length. These flowers are typically used as focals in large arrangements and can be classified into the following categories.
Disbud:
Bloom is formally shaped and full, with a raised center slightly more compact than the surrounding petals.
Fugi:
Similiar to the Spider Pom, the petals of this type are tubular, elongated and shorter in the center, forming a single large, spreading flower head.
Standard:
Also known as a Football Mum, the spoon shaped, incurved petals of this type forma a large globe-shaped bloom.
